For those of you who are die hard barbell fans when it comes to weight lifting, I just want to take this time to let you in on some of the great benefits of using dumbbells as well. Dumbbells are a great way to add variety and a new level of intensity to your workout. I just very quickly want to go over 4 of the biggest advantages to using dumbbells over barbells.
1. Range of Motion
Dumbbells increase your ability to get a better and wider range of motion. This can be very helpful in creating more muscle because the better your range of motion, the more muscle fibers are worked; which means more muscle growth. Just make sure that you are not trying to go too far as this could end up hurting your muscles or joints.
2. Fix Lagging Muscles
With barbells it is possible to lift more however in doing so your body tends to over compensate with the stronger half of your body. This in turn makes your stronger muscles stronger but gives less work to your lagging muscle groups. With dumbbells each side of your body has to do the same amount of work. This of course means that you will build muscle more evenly and consistently.
3. Proper Form
I have found through a lot of testing that lifting with dumbbells actually helps you to keep your form good. This is because if you are lifting improperly dumbbells will tend to start shaking, or wobbling. This is usually an indication that the weight is too heavy for you, you are lowering or lifting the weight unevenly or that you are using other muscle groups to help you lift the weight.
4. Mix It Up a Little
One of the best things about dumbbells is that they are a lot more versatile. This is great for when you want to change up your exercises or use variations of different exercises you already perform. This can of course keep your workouts interesting, and allow you to find exercises that will increase the intensity of your workouts.
These are just a few of the benefits/advantages that I have personally noticed by switching to the use of dumbbells. Now given that I don’t strictly lift just dumbbells I do actually still use barbells but I have grown to prefer using dumbbells for almost all of my exercises.
