Bumps On Back Of Tongue – Other Causes, Symptoms And Treatments

Your tongue is made of micro size buds that are responsible for the taste of foods and beverages in your mouth. They help mixing of saliva and other juices with the food, making it soft and easy to swallow. They are so tiny that you will not even observe them until they swell and form visible bumps. Your first task is to reduce the inflammation and heal the lesions. Then you can think of curing the probable infections that have caused the bumps. The next task is to prevent the recurrence of lesions in the future.

  • Causes:  Common allergens can originate from foods, environment and water. Food allergens can be in the form of spices, acidic content, oil and fat, unhygienic elements etc.
  • Symptoms: Red or yellowish bumps at the back of tongue become clearly visible due to swelling. Irritation with burning sensation can lead to soreness and pain. Inability to chew and swallow food and beverages is another typical symptom.
  • Treatment:  Rub the affected spots with paste of baking soda in water. Allow the ingredients to sink into the lesions and then rinse with warm water. Gargle with normal water and spit out. This will remove most of the allergens from the back of your tongue.
  • Prevention:  Identify and avoid the allergic foods in your diet. Balance your oral health by using neem based tooth paste and mouth wash.

Oral Infections

  • Causes:  Oral infections are commonly caused by bacteria and fungi. They might enter your mouth through unhygienic food, airborne elements, water etc. They get deposited on the surface area of the tongue and start killing the immunity and affect the blood vessels in the tongue. This causes irritation and inflammation in the healthy buds, causing them to swell.
  • Symptoms:  Red lesions with irritation and pain are the common symptoms. They can turn into dark red bumps which cause pain and bleeding when left untreated. Since they come into contact with the teeth while swallowing (even the saliva), they can cause frequent pain.
  • Treatment:  Aloe Vera and neem oil form the combination for healing the lesions and bumps. Mix one spoon of aloe vera gel with one spoon of honey and one spoon of neem essential oil. Rub the mix onto the affected areas. Let the mix soak your tongue for 10 to 15 minutes. Then you can wash your mouth with pure water. You need to repeat the procedure thrice a day for 5 to 6 days. Neem helps in elimination of infectious elements, while Aloe Vera helps in healing the lesions. Honey soothes the affected areas and reduces pain & irritation. Mix one spoon of neem oil with one cup of water and gargle your mouth frequently. This will accelerate the elimination of germs and bacteria from the tongue and the mouth interiors.
  • Prevention:  Stop eating unhygienic food. Cover your nose and mouth with sterile face mask while going out. Gargle your mouth with neem oil and water (one spoon for one glass) regularly. Maintain oral hygiene and health.

Canker Sore

Canker sores are form of mouth ulcer causing severe irritation and burning sensation. You might not be able to recognize the sores until a white patch appears at the hind side of the tongue. This won’t go away no matter how much you clean your tongue.

  • Causes:  Lack of vitamins can cause the growth of canker sores. Smoking, stress and excessively acidic ingredients in the food can cause canker sores.
  • Symptoms:  White patches appear at the back of tongue in the initial stage. This can lead to formation of larger bumps due to swelling. Pain during swallowing and speaking is common, since the bumps come in contact with teeth or upper parts of your mouth.
  • Treatment:  Gentle massage with Aloe Vera and neem oil can help reduce the swelling and elimination of patches. You need to wait for 5 to 10 minutes for the tongue cells to absorb the ingredients. Then you can use a natural mouthwash to cleanse. Gargling with warm salt water can help in restoring the original status of the tongue buds. Massaging the tongue with baking soda is useful in reducing the inflammation in the buds.
  • Prevention:  Brush your teeth and clean your tongue 2-3 times in 24 hours. Eat nutritious foods with plenty of vitamins. Raw carrot and beet juice can help in restoring the level of required vitamins in your bloodstream. Use the mouthwash with neem and Aloe vera ingredients. Neem is a strong antibiotic for destroying almost all types of common harmful bacteria. At the same time, neem preserves the beneficial bacteria needed for saliva generation and preserving the immune levels of the tongue. You will be able to enjoy oral hygiene and health for many years.
